How the flight time calculator works

This tool gives a quick, clear estimate of how long a nonstop flight between two airports should take, and what the clock will read when you land.

For any pair of airports it does three things:

  1. Measures the distance. It calculates the great-circle distance (the shortest path over the curved surface of the Earth) using each airport's latitude and longitude and the haversine formula.
  2. Estimates the flying time. It divides that distance by an average cruise speed of about 800 km/h for a jet airliner and adds roughly 30 minutes for taxiing, take-off, climb, descent and landing. Flying something slower? Pick a helicopter, turboprop or light aircraft from the Aircraft menu and the speed adjusts.
  3. Converts the arrival time. If you enter a departure time, it adds the flight duration and shows the result in the destination's local time, correctly handling the time-zone difference (and telling you if you land the next day).

Because it is based on the straight-line distance and an average speed, the answer is an estimate. Real flights run a little longer or shorter depending on the jet stream, the route air-traffic control assigns, and the aircraft type, but for planning it is usually within about 15% of the published schedule.

Flight time for other aircraft, not just airliners

Most people want the time for a normal jet airliner, so that is the default. But the same distance takes very different times in a slower aircraft, so the calculator lets you switch. Pick the type from the Aircraft menu and the estimate updates to that speed.

The ground-time column is why a private jet and an airliner share a cruise speed but not an answer. A business jet parks closer to the terminal, boards a handful of people and is off the stand quicker, so it carries a 20-minute buffer instead of 30. A helicopter barely has a ground phase at all.

Run a 300 km trip through all five and the spread is the whole point: 53 minutes in an airliner, 43 in a private jet, 56 in a turboprop, 1 h 20 m by helicopter and 1 h 40 m in a light Cessna. Same distance, double the time from top to bottom. It is a quick way to sanity-check a helicopter transfer, a private-jet leg or a small-plane cross-country before you commit to it.

How is flight time calculated?
Three numbers go in. The distance is the great-circle distance, worked out with the haversine formula from each airport's latitude and longitude on a sphere of radius 6,371.0088 km. That is divided by an average speed of 800 km/h, which is deliberately lower than an airliner's Mach 0.78–0.85 cruise (roughly 830–900 km/h) because the aircraft spends the first and last stretch climbing and descending well below cruise. Then 30 minutes of ground time is added for pushback, taxi out, the queue for the runway, and taxi in at the far end. Airlines call the result block time: chocks off to chocks on, not wheels up to wheels down.
Why does the 30-minute ground allowance matter so much on short flights?
Because it is a fixed cost on a variable journey, so its share collapses as the distance grows. On Mumbai to Goa (425 km, about 1h 02m) those 30 minutes are 48% of the whole estimate. On Delhi to Mumbai (1,138 km, 1h 55m) it is 26%. On Delhi to Dubai (2,184 km, 3h 14m) it is 15%. By Delhi to New York (11,755 km, 15h 12m) it is 3%. This is why a "1-hour flight" is never really an hour in the air, and why short-hop estimates are the ones most sensitive to a busy airport.
What is a great-circle distance, and why does the route look bent?
A great circle is the shortest path between two points on a sphere. The bend is an artefact of the map, not the route. Almost every flat world map is a Mercator-style projection, which stretches high latitudes enormously to keep angles correct, so a genuinely straight path across the globe has to be drawn as a curve. A concrete case: the shortest Delhi to New York path climbs to about 70°N — north of the Arctic Circle, over Siberia and Greenland — even though both cities sit near 30°N and 40°N. On the globe it is dead straight. Only the paper is bent.
Why is my answer different from the airline's schedule?
Four reasons, in rough order of size. Winds: the jet stream runs west to east, so an eastbound leg rides a tailwind and its westbound twin fights a headwind — on an India to North America route that gap can be well over an hour in each direction, on identical distance. Routing: air traffic control, airway structure and closed airspace all mean the aircraft flies a few percent further than the straight line. Aircraft: a 787 and an A320 do not cruise at the same speed. Schedule padding: airlines quietly add buffer to protect their on-time statistics, and add more at congested airports. Expect the estimate to land within about 15% of the published block time.
Does it include layovers or connecting flights?
No. Every estimate is for a single nonstop leg. A connection costs you more than the map suggests, and not for the reason most people assume: we measured Mumbai to London nonstop at 7,213 km against 7,424 km via Dubai, which is only 211 km, about 3%, further. On a well-placed hub the detour is almost free. What actually costs you is the layover itself plus a second taxi, climb, descent and landing — that second 30-minute ground cycle, not the extra distance.
What time zone is the arrival shown in?
Always the destination's local time. Enter your departure in the origin's local time and the conversion is handled with the full IANA time-zone database — the same reference operating systems use — so daylight saving is applied correctly for the actual date you are flying, not a fixed offset. Half-hour and 45-minute zones (India, Nepal, parts of Australia) work properly, and the result tells you if you land on the next day, or the previous one.
Can I calculate flight time for a helicopter, private jet or Cessna?
Yes, from the Aircraft menu, and it changes two things, not one: the speed and the ground allowance. An airliner runs at 800 km/h with a 30-minute buffer; a private jet cruises just as fast but gets off the stand quicker, so it uses 20 minutes; a turboprop is 500 km/h with 20 minutes; a helicopter 240 km/h with just 5; a light aircraft 200 km/h with 10. On a 300 km trip that spread runs from 43 minutes in a private jet to 1h 40m in a Cessna.
Is the estimate good enough to plan a connection or an airport pickup?
For a pickup, yes, with a sensible margin: use the estimate, then add time for disembarking, immigration and baggage, which at a busy international arrival can be 45 to 90 minutes on its own. For booking a self-transfer connection, no — use the airline's published times, because the estimate carries no schedule padding and no delay history, and a missed self-transfer is not the airline's problem. The tool is for understanding a journey, not for guaranteeing one.
